Car Seat Safety For Your Infant

It's one of the first things you'll need to learn after you recently become a parent. Car safety is an important factor in parenting. If you don't know how to properly accommodate for your infant child during drives, you're putting him or her at risk of being fatally injured. If you're unsure of how to improve your car safety for your baby, then continue reading below for some parenting tips.

Infant Car Safety Tips

There are many factors you have to keep in mind when practicing infant car safety. But these are among the most important.

Reverse Seating

Whenever your infant child is riding in the car, they should always be sitting in a rear-facing seat, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their safety seat. If your child's legs bend at the knees or touch the back seat of the car when rear-facing, do not be alarmed - this will not harm them.

Back Seat

Your infant should always be in the back seat of your car. If he or she is riding in the front. You're putting them at risk of being fatally injured by the passenger-side airbag.

Proper Strapping

When strapping your infant in, the shoulder straps must be at or below your baby's shoulders. All Child Safety seats have multiple pairs of harness slots so that you can adjust the harness as your child grows. To browse through a wide array of child safety seats on our site with these slots, click HERE.

To use the harness correctly, follow these steps:

  • Ensure the harness is snug so that you're unable to pinch a fold in the harness material after strapping in your child.
  • Ensure the straps aren't sagging or twisting.
  • Ensure the chest clip at the top is positioned at armpit level.

Proper Clothing & Space

During car travel, don't dress your infant in bulky clothing. The bulk of the clothing can interfere with the tightness of the harness. Furthermore, never place a blanket between your child and the harness straps. If you wish to place a blanket on your child, place it over the harness.

Proper Measurement

There will come a time when your child will be too big for the safety seat. One way to tell if your child has outgrown the seat is to check and see if his or her head is near the top of it. There should be at least an inch between the tip of your infant's head and the top of the safety seat.
